Choosing a Healthy Weight Loss Program for People With Special Needs

There are plenty of weight loss program out there for “normal” people. You can choose from programs that are low carb, low fat, or low sodium. You can choose from programs that are based on pre-packaged, freeze-dried meals, or diets that consist solely of chalky-tasting shakes. But, if you have particular health problems or needs, then those diets may not work for you. Choosing a healthy weight loss program when you are not one of the majority can be difficult.

Approximately one percent of the population of the United States is made up of pure vegetarians. That means that they do not eat meat, poultry, or fish. Another million or so people are vegans, meaning that they don’t eat dairy products or eggs, either. These people have very special needs when it comes to dieting. They don’t have the option of eating a small piece of fish for dinner, or even eating anything that has been made with eggs, leaving their choice of healthy weight loss programs a bit limited.

People who are diabetic also have very particular dieting needs. In fact, when diabetics go on a diet, it should always be monitored by a doctor.

A large number of people are allergic to certain foods. In recent years, more and more people have become allergic to nuts (particularly peanuts) and nut by-products. There are also people who are allergic to dairy products (lactose intolerant), wheat products (gluten), and certain fruits. These people can have a very difficult time finding a healthy weight loss program that works for them.

For people who are limited in what they can or cannot eat, the key to losing weight is often based around getting more exercise. Although there are diets especially aimed at the special needs dieting population, they are often expensive and difficult to find.
